A View from the Bridge
In our English class, we have begun to read 'A View from this the Bridge', this is a play written by Arthur Miller. Throughout the play, I'm expecting there to be a lot of tension between different characters as we have been talking moral versus legal justice in this play. Many people thought what they wanted to do was right, even if it was against the law. I also believe that in this play, the neighbourhood will be a strong patriarchal society, as in class we have been talking about how the societies in Brooklyn in 1955, and how the men did the work on the docks while the women stayed at home or did secretarial jobs. In addition to these, I'm expecting someone in the play to strong sense of internal conflict, that will result in them becoming obsessed with something. When we read through some of the quotes in the play, I began to think that many characters would be in conflict with each other and themselves.
The play, 'A View from the Bridge', can show the idea that "literature allows us to perceive the power that one person can have within a certain community." Literature can show the idea of power and the hierarchy of people in a society. An example of this in 'A View from the Bridge' is the character of Eddie. The way Miller has wrote him to be shows us that the society in which they live is a patriarchal society. You are able that he is in control of the people around him, especially his family. Showing the power of a person also helps us to understand the ideas of the book easily as you can have a better idea of how the person is seen in the novel/play, making the plot more engaging.
